Modern landscaping usually means clean lines, hard materials such as concrete and steel, and simple planting. Below: three before and after examples with our exact instructions, the main ideas from the pages we read, a note on how loosely the word modern is used, how to try it in Custom mode, and what the AI can and cannot tell you.

More renders come with a paid plan (see pricing).

Want a different style? See our Japanese garden ideas or Mediterranean garden ideas pages. This page is the modern style, front or back.

Before and after examples

In each pair, the left image was generated by AI as a stand-in for an ordinary yard, and the right image is that same picture edited by AI from a written instruction for a modern look. The exact instructions are printed further down this page. None of them are photos of real customer homes. We made them with our own AI model using 4 processing steps, which may be more than the tool above uses, so a render in the tool may look rougher or different. Each pair is one run of our model, and we show that run.

AI-generated example: a traditional two-storey house with a white porch seen from the street, a green lawn with a curved path of brown wood chips to the front door, round clipped bushes and a brown mulch bed

Before

AI-edited version of the same image: a wide straight concrete path leads to the front door between beds of black mulch with tall ornamental grasses and boulders, and a rust-colored planter stands by the door

After

A traditional front yard made modern (first instruction below). The before image is an AI-drawn stand-in for an ordinary front yard, not a customer photo. Already in the before: the house, the porch, the bushes beside the door, the sidewalk and the trees. What followed the instruction: the curved chip path is now a straight concrete path, the beds are black mulch with tall ornamental grasses and two boulders, and a rust-colored planter stands by the door. What did not: we asked for large rectangular slabs, but the path is one smooth strip with no visible joints; and the round clipped bushes by the door are still there. What it changed on its own: it removed the lawn on both sides and replaced it with mulch and grasses, which we did not ask for. Both images were made with our own AI model.
AI-generated example: a rectangular backyard seen from a glass doorway, with a plain green lawn and a tall wooden fence on three sides, and nothing else on the ground

Before

AI-edited version of the same image: a terrace of large pale concrete pavers with gravel joints, concrete-edged raised beds of ornamental grasses along both sides, a grey lounge chair at the far end and a horizontal slat fence on the left

After

A bare lawn made into a modern terrace (second instruction below). The before image is an AI-drawn stand-in for a plain backyard, not a customer photo. Already in the before: the fence boards at the back and on the right, the doorway frame and the trees. What followed the instruction: large pale concrete pavers with gravel gaps now cover the ground, raised beds of ornamental grasses sit at the edges and there is a lounge chair. What did not: we asked for a horizontal slat fence, but only the left fence has horizontal slats and the back and right fences keep their vertical boards; we asked for a raised bed along the back, but the beds run down both long sides; and we asked for a lounge chair set, but there is only one chair. What it changed on its own: it removed all of the lawn, which we did not ask for. Both images were made with our own AI model.
AI-generated example: a plain white stucco house with a black front door and a front yard on a gentle slope, covered in patchy lawn and weeds, with short concrete steps in the middle and a sidewalk at the bottom

Before

AI-edited version of the same image: two low rust-colored steel retaining walls hold terraces of pale gravel planted with agave and ornamental grasses on each side of the steps, with a warm light glowing under the lowest step

After

A weedy slope made modern (third instruction below). The before image is an AI-drawn stand-in for a patchy sloped front yard, not a customer photo. Already in the before: the white house, the black door, the sidewalk, the fence on the right and the shape of the slope. What followed the instruction: the lawn and weeds are gone, rust-colored steel walls now hold terraces of pale gravel with agave and ornamental grasses, and a warm strip of light shows under a step. What did not: we asked for new wide concrete steps, but the steps look like the same narrow grey steps as in the before; and the light glows only under the lowest step, not under each step edge. What it changed on its own: we did not spot other changes, but compare the two images yourself. Both images were made with our own AI model.

Modern landscaping ideas, one by one

DIY Garden and Airtasker each list modern landscaping ideas. These are the main ones, with what each page says about them.

  • Concrete slab paths and paving: DIY Garden suggests oversized concrete slabs or long rectangular pavers in a straight line to the door, with LED strips along the edges or set into the concrete. Airtasker suggests planned paving that guides guests to lounging and dining areas, and grass growing between clean-cut concrete slabs. Our first and second examples use concrete.
  • Black mulch and ornamental grasses: DIY Garden says dyed wood chips or rubber mulch keep their dark color longer and contrast well with green plants, and lists ornamental grasses among the drought-tolerant plants for gravel gardens. Our first example uses black mulch and grasses.
  • Corten steel planters and walls: DIY Garden describes corten steel planters as rust-colored and developing a patina, filled with grasses, agaves or clipped shrubs, and lists corten steel among the materials for retaining walls, sometimes staggered in height and fitted with lighting or planters. Our third example uses corten retaining walls.
  • Gravel and drought-tolerant planting: DIY Garden lists xeriscape with gravel, boulders and plants such as agave, yucca and ornamental grasses in a neutral gravel color. Airtasker lists a gravel garden as a low-maintenance hardscape and a desert garden with cacti and other low-maintenance plants.
  • Horizontal slat fences and walls: DIY Garden suggests a modern privacy fence of horizontal slats in wood, composite or metal in black, gray or natural wood tones, and smooth stucco walls in light neutral shades with black metal gates or natural wood. Airtasker suggests a horizontal wood slat wall for texture. Our second example has a slat fence on one side.
  • Lighting at steps, edges and signs: DIY Garden suggests LED strips under step lips or along walls and planter edges for safety and ambiance, floating concrete steps lit from below, and a backlit address sign. Airtasker's page does not mention lighting.
  • A minimal water feature: DIY Garden suggests a narrow reflecting pool, a smooth wall with falling water, or a metal fountain made of concrete, stone or brushed steel. Airtasker suggests a built-in waterfall that can become a fish pond.
  • Keep it minimal: Airtasker's minimal modern idea puts hardscaping only at the perimeter of the home with a standard lawn in the middle. DIY Garden suggests one sculptural piece near the entry or in a gravel bed, or a sculptural olive tree set in gravel or a raised bed.

What counts as modern? The two pages do not fully agree

DIY Garden stays with straight lines, slabs, gravel, steel and dark mulch. Airtasker's list is looser: it includes curved edges in place of sharp lines, a Hamptons style with many plants, a Japanese-inspired garden, and grass steps. So there is no single rule. If you want the straight-line look, say so in your instruction, and name the materials, because the AI will otherwise pick them.

Modern pairs with several of our other pages. How to try modern landscaping ideas on your own photo

The tool above is already in Custom mode. The Yard Redesign styles have no text box, so you cannot name the materials or say what must stay. Custom lets you name what to add, where it goes, and what must stay the same.

  1. Take the photo in daylight, showing the whole yard or the whole front of the house, from a straight-on angle.
  2. Describe the change in the Custom Design Requirements box: the materials (concrete pavers, black mulch, corten steel, gravel), the plants (ornamental grasses, agave), and what must stay the same, such as the house, the fence and the camera angle.
  3. Upload your photo under Upload Your Garden Image and click Generate Custom Design. You sign in with an email code or Google when you generate.
  4. Compare the result with your photo, change one thing at a time, such as the path or the planting, and run it again.

What the AI can and cannot do

The AI shows a look: roughly how a modern path, planting bed or retaining wall would sit on your own photo. That helps you compare styles and explain what you want to a landscaper.

It does not know your soil, drainage, climate or budget, and it does not always follow the instruction, as the smooth path, the one-sided slat fence and the removed lawn in the examples above show. It does not tell you whether a plant suits your climate, or whether a retaining wall is safe at that height. Treat the result as a picture of an idea, and check plants, materials and any wall with a local nursery or landscaper.

Modern landscaping instructions to paste into Custom mode

These are the exact instructions we used for the three examples above, in the same order. In the tool above, Custom is already selected: paste one into the Custom Design Requirements box, then upload your photo. Swap in your own materials and what must stay.

  • Change ONLY the yard: make the landscaping modern, replacing the curved mulch path with a straight path of large rectangular concrete slabs, changing the beds to black mulch with tall ornamental grasses and a few boulders, and adding a rust-coloured corten steel planter by the door. Keep the house, the camera angle, the lighting and everything else exactly the same.
  • Change ONLY the yard: make it a modern garden with a rectangular terrace of large pale concrete pavers with gaps of gravel, a horizontal slat wood fence, a long raised planting bed of ornamental grasses along the back, and a low modern lounge chair set. Keep the house, the camera angle, the lighting and everything else exactly the same.
  • Change ONLY the slope: make the yard modern with two low corten steel retaining walls holding terraces of pale gravel planted with agave and ornamental grasses, and new wide concrete steps with a hidden warm strip light under each step edge. Keep the house, the camera angle, the lighting and everything else exactly the same.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good modern landscaping ideas?

DIY Garden and Airtasker suggest concrete slab paths and paving, black mulch with ornamental grasses, corten steel planters and walls, gravel gardens, horizontal slat fences, lighting at steps and edges, and a minimal water feature. The three examples on this page show a modern front yard, a modern terrace and a modern sloped yard.

What materials give a yard a modern look?

DIY Garden lists concrete slabs or rectangular pavers, black mulch, gravel and boulders, corten steel, smooth stucco in light neutral colors, and horizontal slats in wood, composite or metal. Airtasker adds decking, rock walls and gravel.

Are modern landscapes low maintenance?

Airtasker calls gravel a low-maintenance hardscape and lists a desert garden with cacti and other low-maintenance plants, and DIY Garden lists drought-tolerant plants such as agave, yucca and ornamental grasses in gravel. Upkeep still depends on your climate and the plants you pick.

What plants suit a modern landscape?

DIY Garden lists ornamental grasses, agave and yucca, clipped shrubs, a sculptural olive tree, ferns, ivy, succulents and herbs on a vertical garden, and palms and bird of paradise for a tropical scheme. Check any plant against your climate and light with a local nursery.

Is modern landscaping only straight lines?

Not necessarily. DIY Garden's ideas are mostly straight and rectangular, but Airtasker lists curved edges in place of sharp lines as a modern idea too. It is a design choice, so say which you want in your instruction.

Can the AI tell me if a design will work in my yard?

No. It draws the look you describe. It does not know your soil, drainage or climate and does not always follow the instruction exactly, as the captions above show. Measure your yard and ask a landscaper.
